Rector: Professors Must Develop Science

UNAIR NEWS – Rector of Universitas Airlangga has conferred four new professors in social and health. The four UNAIR professors are expected to keep making scientific ideas for the betterment of the nation.

The statement was made by UNAIR Rector when conferring four professors in Garuda Mukti Hall, Saturday, July 7.

“Professors are faced with the demands of scientific development. In order for us to continue to grow, then the professors should develop new researches, “said Prof. Dr. Mochammad Nasih, SE, MT, Ak.

When research becomes routine in addition to teaching and serving the community, UNAIR professors are expected to publish their researches in reputable journals to be responded by the academic community.

Nasih said that the fields of study of the new professors are appropriate with the demand of the time. The four professors have scientific backgrounds of gender sociology, economic sociology, environmental health, and medical radiology.

“The responsibility of the professor is very heavy because it corresponds to the environment, competition to changes in consumption. Not only physical changes, but also the climate, “added Nasih the Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business.

The four UNAIR professors are Prof. Dr. Emy Susanti, Dra., MA, Prof. Dr. Bambang Soeprijanto, dr., Sp.Rad(K)A, Prof. Dr. Bagong Suyanto, Drs., M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Ririh Yudhastuti, drh., M.Sc.

Professor of Gender Sociology Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Prof. Emy is the 459th professor of UNAIR since its establishment and 17th active  FISIP professor. Prof. Emy, who is also 167th professor of UNAIR  as PTN-BH,  delivered a scientific oration titled “Women, Relations of Power and Sociology of Gender”.

“They, women of the upper middle class are exposed to the gender complex disease . They do not feel that they are exploited and substituted. In fact, they, the young women, proudly show their bodies. They do not know that they are exploited for profit or capitalist interests, ” said  Prof. Emy.

Prof. Bambang who is the 168th  professor of UNAIR as PTN-BH delivered a scientific oration entitled “Radiological Innovation in the Molecular and Digital Era”. Ponorogo-born lecturer also added that in its development, radiology innovation has entered several eras and utilized various tools.

In the computer age, X-ray machines make use of innovative tools called CT scans. Furthermore, MRI then found. MRI itself according to Bambang, works by manipulating protons with radio waves on a strong magnetic field.

“Another radiation source in radiology is the isotope, a substance that radiates spontaneously. From a simple tool, there is an innovative machine with computer technology called SPECT and PET. This equipment is also combined with CT and MRI, “said the 108th professor of FK UNAIR.

Professor of Economic Sociology FISIP Prof. Bagong is 461st UNAIR professor since the establishment and the 18th  active FISIP professor. Prof. Bagong who is also the 169th professor of UNAIR as PTN-BH delivered a scientific oration entitled “Economic Sociology: The Dynamics of Capitalism and the Lifestyle of Consumer Society in the Postmodern Era”.

Bagong offered a new approach in the form of Economic Sociology. The man who actively writes in the mass media said that consumer exploitation becomes dangerous when consumers become wasteful consumers.

Bagong offered a solution to minimize the habit of consumptive society by educating consumers to be critical to consume products.

“Desires can be dozens. It takes the customers’ critical intelligence that they face capitalist who always make profits, not just a laborer’s wage, but consumer exploitation. Now consumers should be more critical, “he said.

Finally, Professor of Environmental Health from Faculty of Public Health is 462nd UNAIR professor since its establishment and 11th active FKM professor. Prof. Ririh who was also 170th professor of UNAIR as PTN-BH delivered a scientific oration entitled “Predicting Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Outbreak”.

In Surabaya, every year dengue cases always occur in some areas in Surabaya such as Sawahan and Tambaksari. Based on research conducted by doctoral students of the Faculty of Public Health, dengue virus also has infected areas in Makassar such as Toraja.

“In fact, in the water reservoir, the mosquito eggs already contain dengue virus,” Prof. Ririh.
