UNAIR NEWS – Inspired by the community condition in Tanjungsari village in Boyolangu subdistrict, Tulungagung, East Java especially mothers who breed chicken. Unfortunately, the breeding system is still traditional, but the need of chicken in the market is increasing.
For this reason a group of five students of Universitas Airlangga took the initiative to empower the community through chicken farming which is expected to support the economic activities in Tanjungsari Village, Tulungagung. Furthermore, it is also to improve the standard of living of a better society.
After seeing the condition of the community in the village, UNAIR’s Student Creativity Program (PKMM) team was inspired and conducted the MAMA TERAPUNG training program, short for “Community Chicken Farming Management”.
Under the guidance of his lecturer, Sunaryo Hadi Warsito, drh., MP, PKM MAMA TERAPUNG was conveyed through the proposal. After going through the evaluation of Dikti, the proposal entitled “MAMA TERAPUNG: Efforts to raise public awareness in Tanjungsari Village, Boyolangu, Tulungagung with managerial training in breeding chickens using P3E Method” is qualified and entitled to obtain PKM Program fund from Kemenristekdikti 2017.
According to Septiana Megasari, the head of the PKMM Team, the training was conducted through several stages and methods, including preliminary (survey), stage of implementation which includes counseling and direct practice, as well as mentoring and the last evaluation.
Partners of this MAMA TERAPUNG program are the farmer Mr. Maripin and his wife. The counseling was done at the Village Hall of Tanjungsari by inviting the speakers from the Animal Husbandry Agency of Tulungagung. Then there was a direct practice or giving examples in the partners’ house about the system changes from the original enclosure became semi-intensive, chickens usually left to feed themselves now they use scheduled feed management.

“As a guideline for PKK mothers of Tanjungsari Village in breeding chickens, we also make breeding modules which include material for making cages, maintenance of chicken and preparation of feed,” said Septiana, a student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UNAIR.
Through this program, MAMA TERAPUNG can make the community, especially the PKK women in Tanjungsari village to be skilled in raising the chickens , so it can improve the family’s economy, and even make the village be the pilot project of chicken breeding.
Besides Septiana Megasari as the head of PKMM group, there are also four other students as team members, Tiara Prastiana Putri and Evania Haris Chandra (both from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), Arizqa Miftahurrohmah (Faculty of Economics and Business), and Intan Nurmahani (Faculty of Law).
“We hope the standard of living in Tanjungsari Village, Kec. Boyolangu, Tulungagung is also improving, along with the improvement in their farm, ” Septiana said. (*)
