UNAIR CPPBT Team Introduces Research Result Products of Entrepreneurs and Farmers in East Java

UNAIR NEWS – The research team of Technology-Based Beginner Entrepreneur Program (CPPBT) from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Universitas Airlangga held a product introduction event in the form of Gripeweed Extract to Resist Antibiotic Resistant Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli.” The product by UNAIR CPPBT Team UNAIR was named “Bio Immuno Formula”.

The event held on Saturday 16 September 2017 at Fave Hotel Tuban is a part of the program: Technology-Based Beginner Entrepreneur (CPPBT), Directorate of Technology Based Enterprise, General Directorate of Innovation, Kemenristekdikti in cooperation with Research and Innovation Institute (LPI) Universitas Airlangga.

Attending the event were the farming entrepreneurs and some livestock farmers in East Java. The committee actually invited only 30 farmers / entrepreneurs, but there were more than 50 people attending. They are very enthusiastic listening to the researchers of UNAIR CPPBT as speakers. The research team is chaired by Dr. Ir. Sri Hidanah, MS., with members Emy Koestanti Sabdoningrum, Drh.M.Kes and Retno Sri Wahjuni, Drh., MS.

The participants were enthusiastic because of the interesting topic of study. Moreover, the government will impose a ban on the use of antibiotics in the cultivation of livestock. So farmers start looking for antibiotic replacement products for their farming business.

This activity involved undergraduate students of FKH UNAIR and Veterinary Agribusiness master program. The keynote speaker was a professor of FKH UNAIR Prof. Sri Agus Sujarwo, Ph.D., who presents “Resistant Germs as an Impact of Irrational Use of Antibiotics”. Then Dr. Rochmah Kurnijasanti, drh., M.Si explained about “Gripeweed Extract”.

After the presentation, there was a discussion and then UNAIR CPPBT team gave the example of “Bio Imuno Formula” to the participants who attended. Because the CPPBT Team only provided 30 pack of products, the participants who have not got it took it in FKH UNAIR or it will be sent to them.

Explained by Head of Research Team CPPBT UNAIR, Dr. Ir. Sri Hidanah, MS., That this gripeweed extract product is really needed because chemicals on the market is not optimal as antimicrobial for the eradication or enterotoxin therapy of Escherichia coli which is resistant to antibiotics. Chemicals as antibiotic diarrheal diseases caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli have many side effects such as resistance or the body becomes resistant to antibiotics, making it difficult to treat.

Dr. Sri Hidanah said the ability of gripeweed extract to kill the bacteria was from the active antibacterial substances, such as tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. Then flavonoids serves as an immunomodulator that plays a role to boost the immune system and improve the immune system whose function is disrupted.

Flavonoids that inhibits the growth of bacteria by acting as the enzyme inhibitor by hampering production of energy and and nucleic acid or protein,” added Sri Hidanah.

While the tannin compounds have a mechanism of action of inhibiting and killing bacterial growth through reaction with membrane cells and the destruction or inactivation of the function of genetic material, toxic and the properties against bacterial cell membranes, by way of inhibiting certain enzymes.

Saponins can increase the permeability of bacterial cell membranes, so it can alter membrane structure and function, causing membrane protein denaturation so that cell membranes will be damaged and lysed. While alkaloids are toxic to microbes, so they are effective to kill gram negative and gram positive bacteria.

” This alkaloid works as an antibacteria by destroying the peptidoglycan component of the bacterial cell, so that the cell wall layer is not completely formed and causes the cell’s death,” he added.

The gripeweed extract products will not cause resistance, it is safe and effective compared to chemical products for  antibiotic therapy of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli antimicrobial. This gripeweed extract product has 30% dose for five days per orally effective as antibacterial and immunomodulator against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli antibiotic resistant in broiler chicken. (*)
