UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held International Conference on Animal Husbandry and Life Sciences (ICALHS) on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, and International Conference on Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences (ICVMHS) on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. The events were held online using the Zoom meeting platform.
They were the second international conferences, with the first events being held in 2021. ICAHLS and ICVMHS 2022 raised a theme: “The development of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, human-related veterinary science and life science in maintaining environmental balance post Covid-19 pandemic”.
The committee invited speakers from various countries who are experts in their fields at these conferences. They shared their research, knowledge, and experiences with participants. They also presented key speakers from the ranks of the Indonesian government, including Dr H Syahrul Yasin Limpo SH MH as Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia.
On the first day of implementation, ICALHS invited several speakers. First, Dr Mulyoto Pangestu MRep PhD from Monash University Australia. He discussed the challenges of in vitro embryo production in Indonesia and its future prospects. Second, Prof. Goo Jang PhD DVM from Seoul National University Korea. He delivered a presentation on precision breeding to improve the nature of livestock.
The third speaker was Prof. Simon de Graaf PhD from The University of Sydney Australia. He discussed artificial sheep breeding. The following speakers were Prof. Mitsuhiro Takagi PhD DVM, from Yamaguchi University Japan, Prof. Dr. Mochamad Lazuardi, DVM from Universitas Airlangga Indonesia, and Dr. Qonita Kurnia Anjani from Queen’s University, Belfast, UK.
The second conference, International Conference on Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences, also invited world-class speakers from several countries, one of them was Prof. Dr. Mustofa Helmi Effendi DVM DTAPH. He delivered material on animal products as a source of spreading antimicrobial resistance to human health.
In his presentation, Prof. Mustofa said that Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria become resistant to antimicrobial drugs such as antibiotics. Microorganisms that develop resistance to antimicrobials are sometimes referred to as superbugs.
Next, he presented the plans to be implemented by WHO to increase awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance, through effective communication, education, and training.
