UNAIR Student Executive Board develops ecotourism potential of Tamban Beach Malang

UNAIR NEWS – Student Executive Board (BEM) Ministry of Environment Universitas Airlangga held an environmental community service entitled Jagawana Lingkungan at Tamban Beach, Malang Regency, East Java, from Friday, September 16, 2022, to Tuesday, September 20, 2022. In collaboration with BEM of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) Universitas Brawijaya, this activity aims to develop the eco-tourism potential of Tamban Beach.

“The target of Jagawana Lingkungan activity is the creation of eco-tourism conservation that can improve the green economy of Tambakrejo Village, Malang,” said Aap Muhammad Syafi’i, Head of Jagawana Lingkungan committee, in an interview Tuesday, September 20, 2022. He continued that Tamban Beach has great eco-tourism potential that can improve the surrounding community’s economy.

“Tamban Beach has huge potential to be developed into eco-tourism, such as mangrove forests and beautiful beaches,” explained the Marketing Management vocational program student. Furthermore, Tamban Beach also has abundant natural resources and marine products.

Eco-tourism conservation activities during this environmental service include beach cleaning and mangrove tree planting. The team also built tourism facilities such as directions, environmental signs, and the GPMC (Gunung Piting Mangrove Conservation) eco-tourism information board.

The team also educated local residents on how to use coconut waste so that it has economic value.

“This coconut waste can be used as material for making fertilizer from coconut fibers, plant pots, and various other types of coconut waste utilization,” explained Aap.

In addition, the Jagawana Lingkungan team involved elementary school students in participating in conserving mangrove plants around Tamban Beach. The educational activity was carried out so they know the importance of mangroves for marine and coastal ecosystems and to build awareness to preserve mangrove plants.

In this activity, the team also collaborated with the Tambakrejo Village officials and Family Welfare Movement (PKK) members. In addition, BEM also invited church youth and the surrounding community of Tamban Beach to participate.

“Residents were very happy, especially from the education we provided because they now know that Tamban Beach has great potential to improve the economy of Tambakrejo villagers,” concluded Aap. (*)
