Hospitality Management Students Gain Knowledge from Managers

UNAIR NEWS – Gaining the knowledge does not always in classroom. It also can be explored in Industry of users. That was experienced by second semester student of D-3 Hospitality Management Program, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Airlangga.

There were 67 students learnt some knowledge about hospitality from Banquet Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Remi, and also Front Office Manager, Geri on Saturday (22/4). There were two activities on the event, includes, room tour and table manner.

The public relation officer of the event, Muhammad Abduh Barraq, said that on the room tour the students were invited to see the executive room and executive suite. Besides, the students also invited to look around the restaurant, lounge and kitchen.

“They seem enthusiastic because they lack of knowledge about hospitality and they gain some new knowledge. Furthermore, we choose the hotel which has full facilities in Surabaya,” Abduh Said. He is the fourth semester student of D-3 Hospitality Management Program.

According to Abduh, for the hotel selection of the annual work program of Students community of D-3 Hospitality Management, they chose hotel which at least four stars hotels level. Shangri-La hotel is the five stars hotel with international standards.

The program coordinator of D-3 Hospitality Management Program, Dian Yulie Reindrawati, Ph.D, told that the room tour and table manner was important to know for students since early.

“For example, in this table manner session. They must know about dinning etiquette in international event. They have to know about set up table and how to socialize when on banquet,” Dian Said

Another benefit of hotels visits is to expand the partnership between university and industry. As the education of vocational studies provider, the study program needs the internship placement as place for students to face real work.

Meanwhile, the visits also used for between two parties to share the advice about curriculum and services.

“The hotel officer can give us the advices about the needs of graduates, meanwhile we also give them advice about the services in the hotel,” Dian added
