Four Meanings of Lebaran in Javanese Culture

UNAIR NEWS – After a month of fasting in the holy month, Ramadhan, Muslims celebrate the Eid-al-Fitr on 25-26 June. The lecturer of Philosophy of Science, Listiyono Santoso, M.Hum., revealed the meaning behind the name of Eid al-Fitr, called Lebaran by the Javanese community.

According to Listiyono, Eid is not just a marker for the end of fasting obligations in Ramadan but a condition where door of forgiveness is wide open from Allah.

The meaning of Idul Fitri cannot be separated by the bakdo kupat or ngaku lepat (admit mistakes), not only to God but also to fellow human beings. In addition, Lebaran also means laku papat (four actions) that people do after Ramadan.

“First, the meaning of Lebaran is the opening of forgiveness. Second, luberan which means spilled or abundant. This is a symbol of charity teaching for the poor. Paying zakat fitrah before Lebaran is also a manifestation of concern to fellow human beings, “said Listiyono.

Another meaning is leburan ie melt the sins with each other forgiveness for any mistakes. Finally, laburan as a human symbol to always maintain purity and cleanliness.

In addition, the Javanese people also often call Lebaran with the term riyaya (feast day) which is interpreted as the day of victory. The word “raya” refers to the terms of victory of Muslims for a whole month defeating various desires and restraints.

” Riyaya means a day of victory for Muslims, not defeating enemies outside of themselves, but enemies within themselves, ie desires. In addition, Javanese also often use the term ba’da to refer the feast day. Ba’da means after or after the phase of fasting that makes people get His mercy, His forgiveness so they are free from the torment of hell fire, “said Listiyono during interview.

Substantively, the day of victory is only possessed by Muslims who practice fasting by restraining self from food and drink, resisting the desires that can break the fast and reducing the reward of fasting.

“Eid means return to holiness, just as a newborn infant, so pure with no mistakes. We are pure again because the sins are all forgiven by Allah SWT. The sign of being forgiven is from his daily behavior which actually shows improvement of faith and piety to Allah. Because the quality of faith and piety to God better than before, “explained the author of Epistemologi Kiri.
