UNAIR epidemiologist: Indonesians’ immunity level is high

UNAIR NEWS – Pakar Biostatistika Epidemiologi Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat (FKM) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Dr Windhu Purnomo dr MS menyebut kekebalan tubuh orang Indonesia tergolong tinggi. Itu terbukti dengan sero-prevalence survey oleh pemerintah dengan sejumlah universitas.

Dr. Windhu stated that the survey which was conducted from November to December 2021, aims to find the percentage of population immunity against the Covid-19 virus.

“The result shows that almost 86.6 percent of Indonesians have built up immunity due to vaccination and COVID-19 infection,” he said.

In March 2022, Dr. Windhu continued, another sero-prevalence survey was conducted specifically on Java island. The result revealed that 99.2 percent of the population is immune to the Covid-19 virus.

The result explains the reasons behind Indonesians’ epidemiological condition. This aspect becomes the basis of the government in dropping the outdoor mask policy.

“However, is it [enforced] at the right moment? In my opinion, it’s obvious that the trend rises after four weeks post-Eid Holiday or long holiday,” he argued.

Four weeks post-Eid Holiday

The government should have waited four weeks to observe the rise of Covid-19 cases. However, Dr. Windhu predicted that the condition will continuously improve with no significant rise in Covid-19 cases. Therefore, the policy should be enforced at the end of May or the beginning of June 2022.

“Therefore, I suggest [the government] to enforce the policy after four weeks post-Eid Holiday, at the end of May or the beginning of June,” he suggested.
