UNAIR NEWS – Arts is one of the tools to express the true self of someone, including students. Kala Kolektiva (Kala), a collective coined by Leres Surya Anbara and Muhamad Alzena Guna Ardisa as the founder and co-founder, pursues the idea. The two are students of Communications and International Relations at UNAIR Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
UNAIR NEWS met Alzena. He stated that Kala is a medium for mainstreaming the art and promotion tools for events and local artists to gain more exposure. Kala also provides articles and exclusive visual design.
The Solo-origin student said Leres suggested the idea. It was sparked from her personal Instagram account, ‘Kala Aksara’. She wanted to develop a platform for various kinds of arts, more than just her pieces. They decided to rebrand the platform into Kala Kolektiva.
“There were ten of us in Kala Kolektiva. We equally admire arts and want to help the other artists,” Zen said.

The hip-hop fan stated that, as a community, Kala has some main activities, for instance, the ‘Kala Bersua’ program, where the Kala team interviews artists that need recognition. Through the ‘Kala Submission’ program, Kala audiences can also send their artworks, such as writing or visual works. Besides, Kala also provides a space of ‘Kala Visual’ where they produce visual works for the main theme of events.
In the future, Kala Kolektiva plans to host an art event in Surabaya. Zen has long waited for the opportunity given by a collective like this for her and others. He hopes that the event will run smoothly and get a lot of support. He sees the big opportunity for art mediums to facilitate the young generation.
“I am sure that everyone is an artist. They just have not found their [artistic] side in them, while some may have realized. Kala becomes the medium for expression, a safe space for them to show their true selves,” he ended.
