UNAIR Medicine and Dentistry ranked first nationally according to THE WUR by subject

UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Medicine (FK) and Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) are the oldest faculties at Universitas Airlangga. Since its establishment, the two faculties have made many proudest achievements.

Based on the ranking published by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject of Clinical and Health in The Field of Medicine and Dentistry 2023FK and FKG are ranked first nationally, ranked #10 in Southeast Asia, and ranked #601-800 in world.

For this achievement, the Dean of Medicine, UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Budi Santoso, Dr. SpOG Subsp. FER, gave a response. According to him, winning this title proved that FK and FKG UNAIR are able to complement each other so that they could become the best in Indonesia.

International strategy

Prof. Budi Santoso or Prof. Bus also said that to make the best achievement, all activities in FK and FKG are always directed to collaborate with international partners. It can ultimately have a significant impact on both of them.

International partnerships in the Faculty of Medicine are conducted by inviting as many adjunct professors or visiting professors as possibleThere are four duties of adjunct professors: giving lectures, collaborating in research, collaborating in publications, and becoming a promoter or co-promoter of the department staff appointing them.

Currently, the Faculty of Medicine has 25 adjunct professors. And in May, God willing, there will be three more from Leiden University,” said Prof Bus.

Furthermore, the publication for master’s, doctoral, specialist, and and sub-specialist program graduates must be international and Scopus-indexed. It can boost the rankings of FK and FKG.

“The current double degree program for undergraduates with Melbourne will also be expanded with Western Sydney University, Chulalongkorn University, Manchester University, and hopefully Malaysia and Taiwan (universities) will follow. So that all international classes at FK UNAIR take part in double degree programs,” he said.

Ranking as implication

Responding to the ranking, Prof Bus said that the main goal was not to pursue rankings but to carry out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education as well as possible. The ranking is a side effect and a motivation to be even better.

“Our main goal is to provide a teaching and learning process, conduct a research process including publication, and carry out community service as well as possible. Then the ranking will follow,” said the Dean of FK UNAIR.

Prof. Budi Santoso said that one day there will be leadership regeneration at the Faculty of Medicine. He hopes that all teams will continue to work as an excellent team, produce the best works, and develop what already exists, improve and perfect them. The goal is to let the wheel continue rolling towards improvement to be the best. (*)
