UNAIR NEWS – Drugs play an essential role in the healthcare system. Drugs are one of the most significant components in the cost of health services. Universitas Airlangga students offer drug inventory management solutions.
Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the average expenditure per capita of the population in Indonesia reaches 12.79 percent of the total cost of spending on healthcare services. This figure continues to rise from year to year.
The importance of drugs can also be seen from the fact that inappropriate use of drugs has a fatal impact on patients. Inappropriate drug administration can result in patient mortality.
Improving the quality of healthcare services, especially in drug inventory room, is essential to ensure adequate drug availability and quality. It becomes one of the factors that determine the success of patient treatment.
This problem inspired five students majoring in Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline, Universitas Airlangga (FTMM UNAIR), in their scientific article entitled “Optimizing Drug Inventory Room Control in Health Units”. The five students are Miftachul Jannah, Ulfariyah, Novelia Agata, Fajar Januar Aulia, and Danang Sakti Wicaksono.
Suggesting Pharmacy Computerized Inventory Program
A group representative, Mifta, told UNAIR NEWS on Monday, April 24, 2023, that their group offered alternative solutions for drug inventory management by using the Pharmacy Computerized Inventory Program (PCIP) to recap all phases of the drug use process.
“The PCIP program is a simple web-based program to record all phases of the drug use process, including order, requests, distribution, and inventory. What is stored in inventory and the graph of drug use in real-time” explained Mifta.
In addition, she continued, PCIP can support a pharmaceutical service standard inventory system per the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 35 of 2014. It includes drug inventory using the First In First Out (FIFO) or First Expired First Out (FEFO ) system, storage according to dosage forms, alphabetical storage, and separate storage of narcotics and psychotropics in a special cupboards.
Workstation use as alternative
Mifta and her group also researched other methods to optimize drug inventory room control using a workstation called ScanStation. ScanStation, explained Mifta, is a system specially designed for scanning documents or images with more advanced features and capabilities than ordinary scanners.
“This method can be a special device to support computer usage. At the same time, improving drug inventory management in terms of the accuracy of records,” she said.
Mifta said there are still several other methods to improve healthcare services. Particularly in drug availability, for example, the mathematical programming model (DR20) and Model Predictive Control (MPC). These methods can improve overall healthcare service by improving customer satisfaction with the healthcare system. So that later all the needs or demands for drugs will always be fulfilled.
“It is important in the future to implement system optimization based on a good mathematical model so that later it can provide a real picture of the existing system to improve the quality of health services and drug supply management,” said Mifta. (*)
