UNAIR NEWS – Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought profound changes in various aspects of human life. The World Economic Forum (WEF) anticipates that robots, automation, and AI might supplant human jobs, potentially affecting 85 million jobs by 2025.
Dr. Aziz Fajar SKom MKom, a lecturer at the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline (FTMM) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), emphasizes that although AI can replace human roles in various fields, its intelligence remains limited. AI can only utilize existing resources and cannot create something entirely new. Nevertheless, AI still has the advantage of providing practical benefits and can be accessed anytime.
“AI is only as smart as the person who creates it or helps create it. If observed closely, AI only uses existing resources. Thus, AI cannot create something entirely new, at least not for now,” he said.
However, the speed of AI in processing information and generating output has impressed many. Dr. Aziz made chatGPT technology an example, which is part of generative AI. Although the information provided by chatGPT can be found on the internet, this AI provides practical benefits as it can be accessed and queried anytime.
Regulation and ethics
Appropriate regulations are crucial to control the development of AI and ensure its use adheres to ethical principles. Although ethics in AI development are usually taught in formal education, not all individuals will adhere to these rules. Therefore, strict regulations are necessary to ensure responsible AI use.
“Those who misuse AI, such as creating hoaxes or producing inappropriate images, can be imprisoned. As for the AI creators, it is difficult to punish them because when creating their AI, it may not have been intended for such purposes but was misused,” he continued.
Practical benefits
Despite the risks and limitations, Dr. Aziz stated that many sectors have utilized AI capabilities to streamline their work. In this regard, human intervention remains crucial in directing and controlling AI usage.
“AI is not an enemy but a tool that can facilitate human work processes. Like telephones and calculators, AI serves as a tool that expands human capabilities in communication and calculation,” he says.
