UNAIR NEWS – The series of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Training of Trainers (ToT) events from the SDGs Center Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues. The event held in collaboration with the Center for Global Sustainability Studies Universiti Sains Malaysia, took place in the Amerta Hall, Management Office, MERR-C Campus, Universitas Airlangga.
On the second day, Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the ToT discussed the SDGs module on a global transdisciplinary vision for the future and its connection to each SDG point, including the goals, importance, targets, and indicators of each SDG point. Dr. Noor Adelyna Binti Mohammed Akib, Deputy Director of the Center for Global Sustainability Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia, discussed SDG points 13 to 17 during the workshop.
Environmental aspect in SDGs
Climate change has been a concern for years. In line with SDG point 13, Noor highlighted cases from the past century. For example, the raising temperatures by 0.85 degrees from 1880 to 2012, and the global sea level rise of 19 centimeters from 1901 to 2010.
“We all know that climate change is really happening, so we have to be adaptive and resilient to whatever happens on earth, by utilizing resources wisely, increasing energy efficiency, using renewable energy, and educating on the importance of preserving natural resources,” Noor explained.
Furthermore, Noor also emphasized the importance of water and land conservation as outlined in SDG point 14 and 15. “Indonesia has vast oceans. Therefore, water conservation plays a significant role in maintaining sustainable life. The goal of SDG 14 is to conserve and sustainably use ocean resources to maintain earth’s stability,” she elaborated.
Land conservation is also a key focus highlighted by Noor, including protecting, restoring, and encouraging wise use of terrestrial ecosystems. It involves managing forests, fighting deforestation, improving land degradation and stopping the hunting for biodiversity.

Peace, justice and realization of SDGs inclusivity
Noor explained that peace and justice are the goals of SDG number 16. This can be achieved through concrete actions such as fighting corruption and strengthening law and justice in a country. Furthermore, it is important to build inclusive, strong and fair institutions in the decision-making process based on public participation in democratic countries.
Finally, she mentioned the integration intended by SDG number 17. Which is to build strong cooperation in sustainable development.
“So if SDG 13 to 15 discuss environmental issues, number 16 is about world peace and justice, while number 17 is the ultimate goal. SDG 17 integrates all goals within the SDG into an inclusive objective for sustainable living,” she added.
