UNAIR NEWS – As part of its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again sent a student delegation to participate in a student mobility program. This time, the Aquaculture Program of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) at UNAIR selected ten students to study at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The “Student Mobility in Malaysia” program took place from Monday, July 29, 2024, to Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

Nadhira Hasna Rashida, a delegate representative, stated that this program aims to introduce FPK UNAIR on an international level. She mentioned that it also provides an opportunity to share knowledge and the latest technologies in aquaculture. “Through this collaboration, we can expand our understanding of current fisheries technology and strengthen international partnerships,” she said, as the field coordinator.

Rashida explained that during their initial visit to UKM, the students explored the world of aquatic microorganisms firsthand. Under the guidance of ecology expert Prof. Dr. Ahmad Abas Kutty, the students identified benthos from river samples in Malaysia.

“On the second day, we conducted DNA analysis experiments. This experience highlighted the importance of genetic technology in aquaculture research,” Rashida said.

The delegation then continued to UPM. Rashida shared that the students visited various research facilities, including an ornamental fish museum and a turtle breeding center.

“We also had the chance to attend the I-QUAS exhibition, which showcased phytoplankton, giant freshwater prawns, crabs, seaweed, and more. This experience greatly enriched our knowledge of marine biodiversity,” she said.

Rashida further mentioned that this mobility program provided an unforgettable experience and equipped the students with new skills that are valuable for their future careers.

She explained that the students acquired new skills in benthos analysis, DNA analysis of diatoms, and gained insights into various research projects conducted by students at UPM and UKM. “This program truly opened my eyes to the vast scope of fisheries and marine sciences. I encourage future participants to embrace new challenges, as trying new things is the only way to discover our true potential,” she concluded.
