UNAIR NEWS – In its efforts to support the development of Indonesia’s fisheries sector, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) offers a Bachelor’s degree program in Aquaculture. This program focuses on the cultivation and management of fishery resources, an important part of Indonesia’s rich natural assets, including freshwater, brackish, and marine fisheries.

Putri Desi Wulan Sari, S.Pi., M.Si., the coordinator of the Aquaculture program, emphasized that UNAIR’s Aquaculture Program has achieved Excellent accreditation, a national recognition of the program’s high standards in education. The program also follows an internationally recognized curriculum, ensuring quality learning for its students.

The Aquaculture program at UNAIR has formed various partnerships with institutions both in Indonesia and internationally, providing students with valuable opportunities to build their skills and expand their networks. These collaborations allow students to engage in research, internships, fieldwork, student exchanges, and other academic and extracurricular activities.

“We have academic partnerships with universities through collaborative research projects involving both faculty and students. We also host guest lectures from renowned academics at top global universities and offer international student exchange programs. Our partners include Universiti Malaya and Universiti Putra Malaysia, Kasetsart University in Thailand, Visayas University in the Philippines, and Hiroshima University in Japan,” she noted.

The program also maintains strong ties with industry leaders, including PT Suri Tani Pemuka, PT Central Proteina Prima, and Balai Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau Situbondo, among others. Furthermore, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences is a member of the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN FEN), which enables ongoing international engagement.

“One of the unique strengths of our program is its focus on fish health and aquatic environmental management, which is not typically covered by similar programs. Currently, there is a shortage of specialists in fish health, which presents significant career opportunities in this field,” she added.

Sari pointed out that the job prospects for Aquaculture graduates are very promising, driven by the growing demand for aquaculture products. Graduates can pursue not only technical roles but also entrepreneurial ventures within the aquaculture industry.

“The range of career options for Aquaculture graduates is extensive and meets the needs of various sectors and institutions. Graduates can work professionally in private companies, banking, public service under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, as consultants for NGOs, researchers, educators, or even as entrepreneurs,” she concluded.
