Head of Institute of Tropical Disease

The early history of the establishment of the Institute of Tropical Disease, Universitas Airlangga (ITD UA), can be traced back to a research collaboration with Kobe University, Japan, under the Large Scale Collaborative Study scheme. It was formerly known as the Tropical Disease Research Center (TDRC), but at that time, it was also designated to serve as a diagnostic unit called the Tropical Disease Diagnostic Center (TDDC). TDRC was then changed to the Tropical Disease Center (TDC). Since 2008, the unit has become an institute directly under the supervision of the Rector of Universitas Airlangga, and was renamed ITD UA.

Vision & Missions

Becoming one of the university’s strengths, a leading national and international institute for advancing advanced interdisciplinary research, working and growing in the fields of research, bioproduct development, training, information, and diagnostic services related to tropical and infectious diseases, based on molecular biology.

  1. Conduct high-quality research aimed at international publications and bioproducts, training based on scientific advancements and customer needs, as well as excellent integrated laboratory services that ensure customer satisfaction.
  2. Provide referral laboratory services that serve as a leading referral center by utilizing modern technology.
  3. Develop professional and accountable human resources who are customer-oriented and possess high integrity in delivering services.
  4. Implement health training programs that support the dissemination of research results based on national and international standards.
  5. Conduct research that contributes to the development of science, technology, and innovation in the fields of infectious and tropical diseases, as well as other supporting areas, to produce bioproducts and national and international scientific publications.
  6. Build functional learning and organizational development strategies at the national and international levels.

Tasks and Objectives

The main activities of the Institute of Tropical Disease (ITD) – Universitas Airlangga involve research that integrates biosciences, health, and social sciences; encompassing both basic and applied research as well as innovative studies, particularly in the prevention of tropical diseases, molecular biology, and genetics. Bioproducts are a flagship of ITD, aiming to meet the evolving needs of society, government programs, and development in the global era, while Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are the scientific target of ITD’s products.

In addition, in the fields of training and education, ITD organizes seminars and symposiums as special events focused on the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of various tropical diseases based on molecular biology. Meanwhile, as a form of commitment to serving as a diagnostic referral center for the public and a laboratory that utilizes modern and advanced technology, ITD offers a tropical disease diagnostic service center (TDDC). TDDC activities can be carried out at ITD due to the presence of both national and international institutions.
