UNAIR NEWS – Amid heightened global economic uncertainty fueled by tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, a range of consequences, both positive and negative, has emerged. One notable effect has been a surge in plastic prices, driven by disruptions in the supply of oil and petrochemical feedstocks, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a lecturer in Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga, environmentally friendly packaging offers high biodegradability, allowing it to decompose within weeks and helping reduce environmental pollution. Such alternatives also leave a smaller carbon footprint and support the circular economy by creating opportunities for stakeholders such as banana leaf farmers and recycled paper producers.
Smart steps amid rising prices
Switching to eco-friendly packaging can help reduce dependence on plastic while advancing sustainability goals. The use of locally sourced materials is also important for reducing reliance on imports, while micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) should adapt their business strategies to align with the growing demand for sustainable packaging. In addition, consumer education on safe and environmentally responsible packaging should be strengthened and complemented by incentives for businesses that transition to eco-friendly alternatives.
Taking action for sustainability
Educating consumers and business operators about effective waste management is essential and should go beyond simply replacing one packaging material with another. Efforts should also focus on developing systems that enable biodegradable materials to decompose efficiently, while applying life-cycle thinking to prevent unintended environmental consequences. Furthermore, plastic consumption can be reduced through reuse practices and the adoption of sustainable alternatives. These initiatives should be supported by sustainable business models, including refill systems, packaging-free options, and customer incentive programs.
