About UNAIR
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is one of Indonesia’s leading public universities, officially established on 10 November 1954 and inaugurated by President Soekarno. The name Airlangga, meaning “The Preserver,” was inspired by the wise and capable 11th-century king who successfully unified regions across eastern Indonesia. Originating from medical and dental schools during the colonial era, UNAIR has grown into a distinguished university with excellence across a wide range of disciplines and is widely recognized for its achievements in education, research, and international collaboration.

President Dr. Ir. Soekarno officially inaugurated Universitas Airlangga as a Public University (Perguruan Tinggi Negeri—PTN) in Indonesia on 10 November 1954.
Emblem
The emblem of Universitas Airlangga is the Garuda Mukti, the sacred mount of Bhatara Wisnu (Lord Vishnu) and a symbol closely associated with King Airlangga. The emblem depicts the Garuda Mukti carrying a ceremonial urn, which is encircled by a ring of golden chain links.
Flag
The inauguration of Universitas Airlangga was marked by the unveiling of a statue of Vishnu draped in yellow and blue cloth by Indonesia’s first President, Ir. Soekarno. To commemorate this historic occasion, Prof. R. M. Soejoenoes proposed adopting the colors of the drapery as the official colors of the University’s flag. Yellow symbolizes nobility and excellence, while blue represents courage, integrity, and depth of character.
