UNAIR NEWS – The accumulating waste has prompted students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) to initiate a waste management program. Through the Student Executive Board (BEM) of FISIP, they launched the Gold Waste Bank on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the FISIP UNAIR Gallery.

The Gold Waste Bank aims to facilitate students in sorting, selecting, recycling, and utilizing waste. Thus, it fosters awareness among students to choose and reduce the use of environmentally harmful waste.

This program is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically points 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and 13 (Climate action).

Director General (Dirjen) of the Ministry of Social Environment BEM FISIP, Fara Amalia, explained that the Gold Waste Bank program was started in 2022. Environment is one of the priority issues that BEM focuses on.

“The Gold Waste Bank system continues to improve,” she stated.

BEM has established three Gold Waste Bank points in several strategic locations within FISIP UNAIR. The opening of these locations is expected to facilitate academic members in practical waste sorting.

Fara added that they have collaborated with the Surabaya Waste Bank and the Surabaya Environmental Agency (DLH). The waste collected in this program will be distributed to these two relevant institutions.

Waste deposited must meet the criteria of dry and recyclable waste. For example, plastic bottles, cardboard, glass, and many more. The BEM team even offers rewards to participants who have collected 1 kilogram of waste according to the applicable regulations.

“Later on, there will be rewards for those who diligently deposit waste at the Waste Bank,” Fara explained.

This program is not limited to FISIP UNAIR residents. External parties are also encouraged to participate in realizing the Green Campus at UNAIR. Furthermore, Fara hoped that this program will enhance students’ awareness regarding environmental cleanliness and wise waste management.
