UNAIR NEWS – Members of ALSA LC Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) recently organized the ALSA Care and Legal Coaching Clinic (CLCC), a flagship initiative under ALSA Indonesia. The program is a required annual project for the 15 ALSA local chapters across universities in Indonesia.

This year’s theme, “Empathy and Equality: Encouraging Social Acceptance and Equal Education for Children with Disabilities,” inspired a three-part series of events designed to promote inclusion and understanding. The first activity, the Pre-Event SLB visit, was held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at SLB C AKW Kumara II in Surabaya. The visit gave ALSA LC UNAIR members the opportunity to interact with children with disabilities through engaging activities that developed their motor skills and creativity. The session included painting and handprint art projects, offering a hands-on way to connect with the children.

The second segment, the Main Event Legal Coaching Clinic, took place on Saturday, November 2, 2024. This session combined a seminar with a forum group discussion (FGD) and featured three distinguished speakers representing academia, government, and social advocacy: Prof. Budiyanto, M.Pd., a professor of inclusive education at Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Anna Fajriatin, A.P., M.M., Head of the Surabaya Department of Social Affairs, Tabitha Naema Christy, S.Psi., founder of Komunitas Peduli Anak Wepose.

The discussions explored the current state of inclusive education for children with disabilities in Indonesia, offering insights from multiple perspectives. The FGD allowed participants to engage deeply with the topic, generating actionable ideas for improvement.

The third and final part of the program, the Main Event ALSA Care, was conducted on Friday, November 8, 2024, at SD Kreatif Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya. This event included an interactive Sign Language Class led by the Indonesian Sign Language and Accessibility Team (TIBA Surabaya). Students enthusiastically learned the basics of Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO), including letters and simple words.

Another highlight was the Contour Map Creation activity, where students crafted maps using clay. They worked on templates of the Indonesian map and the ALSA CLCC logo, layering clay to create textured, visually engaging maps.

The ALSA CLCC program is part of ALSA Indonesia’s annual initiatives, featuring a new overarching theme each year. “The ALSA CLCC program embodies two of ALSA’s core pillars: being socially responsible and legally skilled. It also allows UNAIR law students to contribute tangibly to society by fostering empathy towards the educational challenges faced by people with disabilities,” explained Iin, Chairperson of ALSA CLCC UNAIR 2024.

Various stakeholders expressed their support for the program. Afi, Vice Principal of SD Kreatif Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya, shared their thoughts, “This initiative is a step forward for our students to learn how to communicate with their deaf peers and develop empathy for friends with disabilities from an early age.”

Afi added, “We hope the lessons delivered through these programs will leave a lasting impact, enabling our students to grow into future leaders who consistently create inclusive spaces for all, especially individuals with disabilities, in every step they take.”
