UNAIR NEWS – Dharma Wanita Persatuan Universitas Airlangga held a seminar on “Increasing Understanding and Anticipation of Virtual Crime Through Privacy Literacy” in Parlina Room, 3rd floor of Universitas Airlangga Library, Dharmawangsa (B) Campus on Friday, July 8, 2022.
Director of Information Systems and Digitalization, Yunus Abdul Halim S Si M Kom, said that in the digital era, personal data theft using various methods is increasing. It is very detrimental to users because third parties can use personal information. So we must anticipate illegal access to our data.
“In this digital age, there are various types of data theft cases on the internet, ranging from scamware to phishing,” he said.
No free services on the Internet
Yunus said of there are various free services available on the Internet. However, the services records personal data in the background. This information is widely used in meeting marketing needs in cyberspace.
“We pay with our data, starting from the location, IP address, to the things (keywords) that we often look for in search browsers,” he said.
Pay attention to the Terms and Conditions
Each service has terms and conditions for various data that service providers can access. By agreeing to the terms of the service, they can access their personal data. Therefore, we must re-check the terms and conditions of the services.
“The arrangements must be re-checked to avoid inappropriate data leaks,” he said.
Turn off features or services when not in use
Some services use additional features such as camera or GPS access. So to avoid data leaks, we can disable features we do not use.
“We can just turn off some features when not in use to avoid data recording,” he explained.
“The important thing is that we don’t have to be afraid and worried about the things that happen. However, we must block every important access to our personal data such as credit cards, ATMs, and M-banking,” he concluded.
