UNAIR NEWS – Becoming an achiever student at national and international levels is what everybody wants. To boost student achievements, UNAIR Radiology Student Association held an intensive mentoring featuring outstanding student Firman Hidayat on Sunday, May 22, 2022.
Firman shared tips and tricks to become an outstanding student in the mentoring. Firman, who joins various national and international competitions, shared his motivational experience to encourage the students to follow his path.
He said students should master at least five basic skills to make more achievements, especially in paper competitions. Those skills are reading, writing, public speaking, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Firman started his presentation by introducing types of papers divided into two, scientific article and scientific essay. Students often misunderstand the two as both of them are written works but have different content.
The difference between scientific article and essay
According to Firman, a scientific article is a literature study or conducted research that consists of 5 chapters with 20-page content. The content is more complex, consisting of 70 percent facts and 30 percent opinions.
Essay, he continued, is ideas that are yet to be executed. The essay is based on the literature study, journal, and books as the data sources. It consists of three chapters including an introduction, content, and closing. Essay contains five to ten pages with 70 percent opinions and 30 percent facts.
“Scientific article is one of many tools to accomplish academic achievement. Usually, it is in the form of reports or research activities carried out with the results provided. Essay is barely an idea. Therefore, a scientific essay should be based on valid data to support the statement,” he told the participants.
Why scientific article? Firman gave a few reasons. One of them is to implement the knowledge. Secondly, to develop writing skill and critical thinking. Thirdly, to practice before writing a thesis and to make proud of the alma mater and people surrounding.
At the end of the webinar, he advised the participants to develop their interests and achievements during the student phase. There are many benefits of joining an outstanding student contest. Some of them are expanding the network, applying for scholarships, and enjoying free trips financed by campus.
