UNAIR NEWS – Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) customers have been restless these days due to the disruption in the system of the largest Islamic bank in Indonesia. Furthermore, customers are worried about LockBit 3.0’s tweet claiming responsibility for the disturbance affecting the BSI. They claimed to have stolen 15 million user data and threatened to spread it.

Even though there has been no confirmation, the tweet indicates that the public must continue to be vigilant against cyber attacks. However, malicious software attacks need to be anticipated. To UNAIR NEWS on May 15, 2023, a lecturer in Data Science Technology Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline (FTMM) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Dr Maryamah SKom, said that the virus deliberately disrupted computers or computer networks.

Ransomware is a type of malware that threatens to publish the victim’s personal data, retrieve information or permanently block access to a network unless the hacker gets money or ransom according to their wishes,” she said.

Recognizing hackers method

According to her, hackers usually will threaten the data owner to pay a sum of money, and if it is not fulfilled, then the hacker will publish the personal data or block access to the network permanently. In the BSI case, data hacking was bank customer data containing account information, mobile banking accounts and other information.

“Hackers don’t need to ask customers for a certain amount of money because they can immediately drain the contents of the account from taking the customer data,” she added.

She added that when hacking occurs, you should immediately report it to the authorities so that the cyber team can handle it immediately and don’t panic and make a rash decision. Also, if the hacker asks for a ransom it’s best not to give it right away because we don’t have any certainty whether the data will come back after the money is given.

“Some hackers take advantage of the psychological condition of panicked victims by offering some money, but that’s not the best solution,” she said.

How to anticipate hacking

She urged people to always be vigilant in using technology. They should not access unrecognized links from social media easily. For her, computer-based systems without regular system security updates are very vulnerable to hacking.

We can also maintain data security through simple ways, such as regularly changing passwords and updating software. More than that, she added, to always be careful in spreading private data such as ID number or others.

“Frequently updating devices, both smartphones and laptops. Don’t use untrusted public wifi, especially to access sensitive data websites or applications such as mobile banking and internet banking,” she concluded.
