Climate change poses significant challenges for coastal communities in northern Central Java, Indonesia, particularly in the cities of Semarang and Demak. These regions are increasingly vulnerable to a multitude of environmental threats, including rising sea levels, land subsidence, coastal erosion, tidal flooding, and extreme weather events. Such phenomena not only jeopardize the livelihoods of local residents but also threaten agricultural productivity, the integrity of infrastructure, and the overall quality of life. As these challenges intensify, it becomes imperative to implement inclusive and sustainable adaptation strategies that can effectively mitigate the impacts of climate change. These strategies should focus on developing climate-resilient infrastructure, promoting economic diversification, engaging in strategic spatial planning, and fostering educational initiatives within the community.

This research aims to explore the adaptation strategies that coastal communities are employing to enhance their resilience in the face of these pressing issues. A particular emphasis will be placed on critical areas such as food security, economic flexibility, and environmental sustainability, with specific projects like mangrove restoration serving as focal points for analysis. By investigating these adaptation measures, the study seeks to answer two fundamental questions: How do coastal communities adapt to climate change within their unique geographical and social contexts? And to what extent have these adaptation measures contributed to sustainable community resilience in coastal areas?

To achieve these objectives, the research will utilize a qualitative approach, drawing on both primary and secondary data sources. This will include comprehensive literature reviews, an examination of relevant legal frameworks, and interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government officials, community members, and representatives from civil society. The insights gained from this study are intended to enhance policymakers’ understanding of the challenges faced by coastal communities, enabling them to devise more effective strategies, identify existing gaps in current approaches, and create targeted programs that support the adaptation of these communities. Ultimately, the goal is to foster sustainable resilience in the face of ongoing climate change challenges, ensuring that the communities of Semarang and Demak can thrive despite the adversities they face.
