UNAIR NEWS – Student Executive Board of Faculty of Humanity (BEM FIB) UNAIR and Ruangguru held a career preparation webinar ‘Unlock Your Potential & Get Ready For Your Career’ on Sunday, June 12, 2022.

The event featured Alowisya NB Iki M A Project Lead Lifelong Learning as a speaker. She shared tips on career preparation in college.

She said that students should be prepared to face challenges in their work-life. Institutions and companies currently prefer students or fresh graduates with new potential and skills.

“In professional life, companies do not only need knowledge. They need soft skills like innovation development, creative ideas, negotiations, critical thinking, and a good understanding for problem-solving,” she said.

Tips for preparing successful future career

In the event, Alowisya shared tips on how to prepare well future career for students:

  1. What to do: Developing self-capacity

There are five things that students should pay attention to in developing their capacity. First of all, finish what was started, for example, the student responsibilities.

Second, map and plan the career path, whether to pursue a master’s or to take an internship. Third, sharpen up skills, like TOEFL and IELTS [for language skills], or take other certifications to improve student employability.

Fourth, participate actively in social activities and build relations on social media. Lastly, instill self-discipline.

  1. Enriching Yourselves: Scholarship hunt

Hunting scholarships may not be an easy task. In this regard, if students want to continue their studies, they have to prepare well.

It can be started by seeking information about the country, university, and the study program student interested in. Then, prepare the required documents, such as TOEFL IBT or IELTS certificates, training certificates, etc. Lastly, read a lot of books and practice writing essays.

If possible, find an experienced mentor to help the scholarship preparations be more measured and thorough.

Tips getting ready for work

Alowisya also shared tips for work preparations for students:

  1. Making use of social media

In this digital era, social media holds an important role. Therefore, students should use the platform wisely by using LinkedIn, for instance.

LinkedIn allows students to share their achievements and current social activities, create online CV, and get more information about job vacancies. More than that, students can build a network with professionals.

  1. CV and interview

“CV doesn’t require a picture. The most important part of it is your experience or social activities. Pay attention to the font options; it must be clean, clear, and concise,” said Alowisya.

She advised the students to update their CV regularly. Adjust the contents of the resume with the position and company. The CV, the applied position, and the company should be in line.

Before the interview, the applicants should read the job requirements, the company’s goal, description, and other details. These are the recruiter’s frequently asked questions during an interview.

“Eye contact, confidence, proper attire, and make sure your internet connection is stable for the online interview,” she said.
