UNAIR NEWS – Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) recently conducted a working visit to Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) to discuss on the university admission system for both public and private institutions. The visit took place on Thursday (February 20, 2025) in the Amerta Room at the UNAIR MERR-C Campus Management Office.

The event was attended by Vice Chair of Commission X DPR RI, Hj. Himmatul Aliyah, S.Sos., M.Si., UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, M.T., Ak., CA., along with other members of Commission X DPR RI, representatives from the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDikti) for the East Java region, and leaders from various public and private universities in Surabaya.

Himmatul Aliyah underscored the significance of this visit in ensuring that the university admission system remains fair and transparent. “The admission process in higher education institutions must uphold principles of fairness and equity, placing greater emphasis on merit-based pathways and accessible entrance examinations,” she stated.

She further emphasized that universities must actively contribute to fostering educational equity by expanding opportunities for students from underprivileged and remote areas, particularly those classified as 3T (disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost regions). “Higher education institutions must guarantee that high-achieving students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have equal access to quality education,” she added.

UNAIR’s admission process

Addressing UNAIR’s student admission policies, Rector Prof. Nasih highlighted that the university prioritizes academic excellence over sheer enrollment numbers. “UNAIR follows the principle of ‘small is beautiful.’ While our student intake is not extensive, we are dedicated to maintaining a high standard of education,” stated the professor from UNAIR’s Faculty of Economics and Business.

Prof. Nasih also reaffirmed UNAIR’s commitment to supporting students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. “Regarding the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) Scholarship, UNAIR is among the universities that provide a substantial number of scholarships annually. In 2024 alone, we awarded 1,400 KIP Scholarships, and even within the independent admission pathway, KIP Scholarships remain available at UNAIR. Thus, students facing financial constraints who qualify for KIP should not hesitate to apply through UNAIR’s independent selection process,” he concluded.
