UNAIR NEWS – Libraries and universities are two inseparable entities. Libraries play a crucial role in accelerating the transfer of knowledge. This awareness of the library’s essential role can be traced back to the history of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Library, which was established simultaneously with the university’s founding on November 10, 1954.

In its early years, the UNAIR Library’s collection of books was still very limited. These initial collections were obtained through personal donations, government assistance, and support from international institutions. Two years after its establishment, the library had acquired 1,345 book titles, most of which were contributions from Universitas Gadjah Mada, the United States Information Service (USIS), the USSR Embassy, and individual donors such as Mr. Mak Goan Po.

In 1955, the library was known as the Perpustakaan Kantor Pusat Universitas Airlangga. Over time, faculty libraries—such as those of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Economics, Law, and Pharmacy—were also established to meet the needs of students and faculty members.

In 1970, through a Rector’s Decree, all faculty libraries were consolidated into the UNAIR Library. This integration process faced several logistical challenges. However, this step marked a significant milestone in successfully managing library collections in a more integrated manner. The development continued with the establishment of library facilities across UNAIR’s three campuses: Dharmahusada-A Campus, Dharmawangsa-B Campus, and MERR-C Campus.

Under the leadership of Endang Sumarsih, SH MLS, from 1992 to 1998, the library also served as a repository library for the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This collaboration aimed to expand the library’s collection to include various international publications.

In line with technological advancements, the library has continuously introduced innovations. An automated system was implemented to connect libraries across the three campuses. This system also provides online access to the library’s collections, allowing users to more easily find relevant information aligned with their fields of study.

As the heart of the university, the library continues to evolve with the times. From a modest collection, it has grown into a modern information hub. The library has played a significant role in history, helping to advance knowledge and higher education in Indonesia.
