UNAIR NEWS – In collaboration with Bababos, the Directorate of Career Development, Entrepreneurship Incubation, and Alumni (DPKKA) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted a webinar titled “Nurturing Emotional Intelligence for Professional Success”.
The online seminar was held on Thursday, February 29, 2024, through Zoom Meeting and the DPKKA UNAIR YouTube channel. Bababos representative O’ok Suyantoko, S.Pd., MM, Academy & Development Sr. Manager delivered material on Nurturing Emotional Intelligence for Professional Success.
He explained that emotions are conscious mental reactions and subjective experiences as strong feelings. Generally, emotions are directed towards specific objects and accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in our bodies. Emotions can lead to many things.
“Emotions are not limited to just anger or sadness. Emotions can take the form of frustration, embarrassment, joy, satisfaction, surprise, irritation, disgust, and many other forms of emotions that we have,” he said.

Emotional management
Here are three things that can be done to manage emotions. Firstly, addressing our physiology through exercise, selecting appropriate food, and being mindful of gestures or posture.
“Secondly, the mind. Nowadays, the mind is readily disrupted by the flood of news, interpersonal connections, unsupportive environments, and politics. Given the ease of accessing news, it is crucial to selectively choose the news we consume,” he said.
Thirdly, managing emotions through language. People need to carefully choose their words when before they speak to avoid different perceptions. It is also necessary to pay attention to the tone and intonation when asking questions.
Benefits of emotional intelligence management
Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in the workplace. Being able to identify the emotions of others enhances communication effectiveness, particularly within a team. Moreover, emotional intelligence also develops one’s leadership skills.
“In mastering leadership skills, it’s essential to first lead oneself by understanding our own emotions. This empowers us to effectively recognize and navigate the emotions of others when assuming a leadership role,” Suyantoko said.
Effectively handling emotions also provides an individual with the capability to serve as a mediator or engage in conflict resolution. Consequently, when working collaboratively in a team, one can effectively serve as a mediator. Ultimately, Suyantoko mentioned that emotional intelligence also yields benefits in areas such as decision-making, team collaboration, and customer relations.
