UNAIR NEWS – Students at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) actively participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities across different fields, including the arts, journalism, and sports. These activities aim to foster students’ social awareness while enriching both their academic and non-academic experiences. Activities in the fields of arts, journalism, and sports can be categorized into three types. Participatory events such as competitions and contests, and regular programs designed as ongoing initiatives. These include art performances, sports tournaments, and various campus traditions.

UNAIR students engage in many arts and cultural events. One example is Malam Bhineka Tunggal Ika, held on October 2, 2025. This event took the form of a charity night and bazaar, raising funds for the construction of a student meeting hall. During the event, students dressed in traditional attire and performed various forms of traditional art, such as the Legong dance from Bali and the Serampang Dua Belas dance from Kuala Deli.

Another notable performance was a drama production staged to celebrate UNAIR’s 4th Anniversary on October 24, 1958. The play, titled Menanti Pagi Berseri by Juliarendra Moektijo, was performed by students from the Faculty of Law (FH), Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG), and Faculty of Medicine (FK).

In addition to theater performances, UNAIR students also participated in Choir Fantasy in Concert, held at Bank Jatim Hall. The event featured a choir performance alongside a stage play and a cabaret show, which included performances by nationally acclaimed comedians.

In the field of sports, UNAIR has also actively participated in various national competitions. One example is the 6th Student Sports Week (POM) held in 1962, where UNAIR secured third place nationally. The university excelled in several events, including women’s table tennis team, pole vault, women’s badminton team, and fencing team competitions.

Beyond formal competitions, UNAIR also holds daily sports matches, especially as part of its anniversary celebrations. These include inter-university soccer tournaments, with participation from UBAYA, ITS, IKIP, UPN, and STIPAK.

In the field of journalism, UNAIR students have the opportunity to develop their interests and skills through journalism training sessions. These workshops feature renowned figures in Indonesian journalism, such as Rosihan Anwar, BM Diah, and Mahbub Junaidi. The training aims to enhance students’ journalistic skills while reviving “Surat Kabar Airlangga” as UNAIR’s official student newspaper.

In recognition of the importance of student activities across these fields, UNAIR established Student Activity Units (UKM) at the university level, each focused on a specific area of interest. These units serve as platforms for students to pursue and develop their talents in areas such as sports, martial arts, arts, and religious activities.
