Exploring Legal Transnationalism and Contemporary Legal Issues in Asia Through Airlangga Summer School 2023

UNAIR NEWS – The Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) organized the Airlangga Summer School 2023 from July 31st to August 11th, 2023. Students from UNAIR’s Faculty of Law, Universiti Zainal Abidin Malaysia and Cambridge University England attended the event. The program took place both offline and online, from July 31st to August 11th, 2023, at PBL Room, 3rd Floor, FH, UNAIR.

Creating Opportunities for Collaborations

The event commenced with a warm welcome from the Dean of the Faculty of Law, UNAIR, Imam Prihandono SH MH LLM Ph.D. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of education by collaborating with strategic partners from international universities. The Airlangga Summer School 2023 theme was “Legal Transnationalism and Contemporary Legal Issues in Asia,” focusing on strategic discussions.

“This event provides an opportunity for collaboration and learning with students from various countries who share the same interests and enthusiasm in understanding legal differences in Southeast Asia. I believe this event will be beneficial and provide valuable experiences for all participants.”

Imam also emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration in comprehending complex legal issues in the Southeast Asian region. He hopes that Airlangga Summer School 2023 will serve as a platform to strengthen academic ties and build cross-national networks in the field of law. With students from different countries, this event is expected to enrich global understanding and perspectives on law in the Southeast Asian region.

Legal Diversity in Southeast Asia

Dr. E Joeni Arianto Kurniawan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, UNAIR, was one of the speakers who presented on the topic “Diversity of Legal Culture in Southeast Asia (SEA).” Joeni discussed the differences in legal culture in the Southeast Asian region, with a focus on comparing the legal systems of Indonesia and Malaysia. This presentation provided a profound insight into how these legal differences hold their complexities and can be opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation in tackling legal issues in the region.

“The legal differences among Southeast Asian countries are inseparable from factors such as nations, sociology, language, culture, and religion. Thus, they form a complex array within them,” he explained.

Introduction to the Indonesian Legal System

Next, Dr. Indria Wahyuni, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, UNAIR, delivered a presentation on “Introduction to the Indonesian Legal System.” Indria introduced international participants to the Indonesian legal system, which has unique characteristics influenced by its rich history and culture. This material is relevant in the global context as it opens up opportunities for cross-national cooperation in facing legal challenges in Southeast Asia.

“As one of the countries in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has a unique legal system influenced by its culture, religion, and rich history. Understanding the Indonesian legal system can foster collaboration and better comprehension in addressing legal challenges in this region.”

Indria’s presentation provided an in-depth perspective for international participants to comprehend the legal framework in Indonesia and how it interacts with relevant contemporary issues in Southeast Asia.

Focus Group Discussion (FGD) Session

FGD also played a crucial role in the Airlangga Summer School 2023 program. Participants from various countries actively engaged in this interactive session, discussing Legal Transnationalism and Contemporary Issues in Asia. These discussions strengthened academic connections among participants and enabled them to share views and thoughts on the topics covered. (*)
