UNAIR NEWS – The 2025 National Selection Based on Test (SNBT) serves as one of the primary gateways for prospective students pursuing higher education. Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has now opened SNBT registration for the Bachelor of Medicine program under the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Natural Sciences (FIKKIA), with a minimum intake of 15 students. This presents a significant opportunity for high school graduates aspiring to study medicine at UNAIR’s Banyuwangi campus, located at the eastern tip of Java.
The region’s diverse geography and thriving tourism industry offer students a unique learning experience that combines academics with travel. FIKKIA’s expansive field-based learning environment further enhances this opportunity. Additionally, the program boasts a distinctive feature—its specialized Travel Medicine curriculum block, which sets it apart.
Travel Medicine block
Head of the FIKKIA Medicine Program, Dr. Muhammad Nazmuddin, MSc, emphasized that the Travel Medicine curriculum plays a pivotal role in equipping students with competencies in managing health-related challenges in the tourism sector. This specialized block provides hands-on experience, allowing students to design health programs tailored to various tourism destinations, focusing on preventive care and risk assessment for travelers.

The implementation of this specialized knowledge will significantly enhance healthcare services for both domestic and international tourists, as well as for the local Banyuwangi community. “FIKKIA’s Medicine Program at UNAIR is committed to delivering high-quality medical education. We collaborate with UNAIR’s Faculty of Medicine and both national and international institutions to establish excellence in the field of Travel Medicine,” Dr. Nazmuddin stated.
Integration with Banyuwangi’s tourism industry
The Travel Medicine block is set to launch in the spring semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. To ensure seamless execution, the Medicine Program at FIKKIA has engaged in coordination meetings with the Banyuwangi Regency Tourism Office, with discussions taking place on Monday, March 17, 2025. Key discussion points included identifying suitable tourism destinations for practical training, selecting primary locations, and aligning the program’s schedule with Banyuwangi’s tourism calendar.
The diverse range of tourist attractions in Banyuwangi offers students a broad spectrum of learning experiences. “Planned destinations for student training include Kawah Ijen and Tamansari, though the final selection will be adjusted based on academic requirements,” Dr. Nazmuddin explained.
Curriculum development remains a top priority, with ongoing efforts to enhance educational modules for students. In future semesters, students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and gain further field experience in travel medicine.
The Travel Medicine initiative will also be promoted through official channels such as @Banyuwangitourism and FIKKIA UNAIR’s official accounts. This widespread dissemination aims to prepare students to become medical professionals with a comprehensive understanding of Travel Medicine, ultimately enhancing healthcare services in tourism-centric areas.
