UNAIR NEWS – Faculty members from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) paid a visit to the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSAS) at Kyoto University, Japan, on Friday, December 6, 2024. The delegation, which included Bagong Suyanto, Jusuf Irianto, Irfan Wahyudi, Rahma Sugihartati, Agastya Wardhana, Rizky Sugianto, and Febby Widjayanto, received a warm welcome from the CSAS team.

The visit began with a guided tour of the CSAS library, led by Minami-san, a librarian fluent in Indonesian. The library houses an impressive collection of resources focused on Southeast Asia, with notable emphasis on Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Its wide range of books and journals, available in native languages, English, and Japanese, underscores CSAS’s dedication to in-depth research on the region.

Following the tour, the FISIP delegation met with CSAS Chair Professor Fumiharu Mieno and CSAS Coordinator Professor Masaaki Okamoto, who also speaks fluent Indonesian. The meeting focused on exploring potential collaborations between FISIP UNAIR and CSAS. Concrete plans were discussed, including drafting a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), organizing guest lectures, implementing adjunct professor programs, facilitating inbound and outbound exchanges for students and staff, and planning an international conference for 2025. The FISIP delegation also introduced various research centers under their faculty, including the Africa Study Center and the Center for Death Studies, which received enthusiastic responses from CSAS representatives.

The immediate agenda includes hosting a Researchers Gathering, a virtual meeting involving researchers from FISIP UNAIR and Kyoto University. This initiative aims to strengthen academic collaboration while supporting the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. This partnership marks a significant step in expanding global networks and fostering research innovation in the Southeast Asian region.
