UNAIR NEWS – It’s no secret the United States is the target of students from all over the world. Among the reasons are quality curriculum and education, to the scholarships offered by Uncle Sam’s country. One of the most sought-after scholarships is Fulbright. This program is intended for someone who has completed their undergraduate education and wants to continue their master’s or doctoral education in the United States.
David Segoh SS MEd PhD was present as a guest speaker to share information about the Fulbright Scholarship in the Education USA Fulbright Program Session webinar on Tuesday, January 17, 23. On that occasion, David shared his experience in completing his doctoral degree at Washington State University through a Fulbright scholarship. The scholarship is funded by the United States Department of State and administered by The American-Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF).
“The Fulbright Program broadened my view of the world, especially in my field of study. In terms of skills, I studied the latest standards and developments in my area of expertise,” said David.
David Segoh, a lecturer at UNAIR Faculty of Humanities, added that this Fulbright program has shaped him as an individual who cares more about social issues and can adapt to a changing environment. He said the Fulbright program has no age limit for application. It is also a prestigious scholarship fully funded from the start of the application.
He emphasized that the Fulbright scholarship offers various fields of study except for medicine, nursing, dentistry, and clinical psychology because they need different permits and codes of conduct in various countries. He took Educational Technology studies which studied educational curriculum development and the use of technology for education.
Since he was a child, David has idolized American film series and dreamed of going to that country. Before completing his studies at Washington State University, he also failed to get another scholarship at the beginning. David suggested that preparing the required documents should be done in advance and thoroughly.
Then, the duration of the funding covered by the Fulbright program is different, the master’s degree is two years, and the doctoral degree is three years. The general requirements for registering for Fulbright are Indonesian citizens, have academic achievements, fluent in English as evidenced by a TOEFL ITP 550/ iBT 80/ IELTS 6.5/ Duolingo 105 certificate, minimum GPA 3.0 (scale of 4), active in social or organizational activities, and willing to return to Indonesia after completing education.
“Hopefully, after studying in America, they can contribute more to the country,” concluded David. (*)
