Garbage piling up, UNAIR students encourage Punjul community to use eco-enzyme for dish soap

The demonstration of eco-enzyme making from household waste on Friday, January 27, 2023, at the Punjul Village Hall, Kediri.

UNAIR NEWSUniversitas Airlangga students demonstrated the eco-enzyme liquid in the ECO-PUNJUL workshop in the Community Service Program (KKN) at Punjul Village, Kediri, on Friday, January 27, 2023. For the record, Kediri has become one of the biggest waste generators in East Java, with 3,500 square meters of production per day.

The program coordinator Diva Adinda Purnamasari stated that the locals always throw the waste in the empty plot, which does not function as a garbage disposal. It leads to piling up garbage that harms the environment.

“The untreated waste of the environmental services reaches 3,000 square meters. It has the risks of environmental pollution and disasters,” she said.

The program targets the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) members as housewife representatives. They attend the demonstration in large numbers. The final output is an environmentally friendly product with useful and economic values.

Farrel Christian Tomo was featured as the speaker. He stated that eco-enzyme is a liquid produced from organic substances and a fermentation process of organic waste residue, sugar, and water.

Farrel and his friends initiated the workshop on eco-enzyme making to make use of household kitchen waste. The workshop also aims to decrease the amount of waste produced in Punjul Village.

The eco-enzyme was made of raw, fat-free vegetables and fruits with soft textures. Then, the liquid was mixed with brown sugar and water with a ratio of 10:3:1.

“The eco-enzyme will be kept for three months, resulting in worth buying products,” Farrel said.

He demonstrated the making of eco-enzyme to be dish soap, by mixing 125 ml eco-enzyme liquid, 375 ml boiled water, 63 grams of salt, and MES liquid.

“Once the liquid colour turns clear or transparent, the dish soap is ready to use,” he added.
