UNAIR NEWS – PIMNAS is a familiar term to students because it is the most prestigious scientific competition in Indonesia. Students show great enthusiasm for this competition every year due to enormous benefits students could gain from participating and winning.
However, not many people know the history and origin of PIMNAS as a prestigious event. PIMNAS originated from a competition for scientific writing (LKTI) and productive writing (LKIP), first held in 1988 at the University of Indonesia (UI). The event was originally called the Student Scientific Work Competition (LKIM).
The term PIMNAS was first mentioned in 1990 when the event was held at Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB). From its inception in 1988 to 2003, there was no grand champion title in the PIMNAS events for 16 editions. The grand champion format only emerged during the 17th PIMNAS in 2004 at the Telkom College of Technology (STT-Telkom) Bandung.
PKM transformation
Before the final event of PIMNAS, there was a precursor activity called the Student Creativity Program (PKM). Initially, PKM offered five schemes: PKM-Research (PKM-P), PKM-Entrepreneurship (PKM-K), PKM-Community Service (PKM-M), PKM-Technology Application (PKM-T), and PKM-Scientific Writing (PKM-I). Since January 2009, Ditlitabmas has managed six PKM schemes, with the separation of a category into PKM-Scientific Article (PKM-AI) and PKM-Written Ideas (PKM-GT).v
In 2011, the number of PKM fields increased to seven with the addition of a new field, PKM-Karsa Cipta. In 2019, another social media-based PKM field, PKM-GFK (Constructive Futuristic Ideas) was introduced.
Starting in 2021, PKM-Research (PKM-P) changed to PKM-R and PKM-Community Service (PKM-M) became PKM-P. Meanwhile, PKM Technology Application (PKM-T) changed to PKM- Science and Tech Application (PKM-PI).v
From 2022, PKM-R guidelines separated PKM-RE and PKM-RSH. In addition, PKM-GT changed to PKM-GFT and PKM-GFK changed to PKM-VGK.
Adhikarta Kertawidya
In PIMNAS, most students look forward to the awards. Awards come in several forms such as trophies, certificates, and medals. The most prestigious award is the Adhikarta Kertawidya trophy.
At first, PIMNAS winners were determined individually, so there was no overall winner. However, the idea of establishing a grand champion, first place champion and other champions emerged in 2004, with the organized XVII PIMNAS in Bandung. The grand champion is entitled to receive the rotating trophy from the Minister of Education and Culture, ‘Adhikarta Kertawidya.’
The organization of PIMNAS is carried out in rotation between state and private universities, considering the readiness factor. In 2024, Universitas Airlangga will host PIMNAS again after 22 years.
