UNAIR NEWS – Prof Dr Ferdiansyah dr Sp OT(K) was officially inaugurated as UNAIR professor on Wednesday, December 12, 2022. He becomes the 123rd professor of UNAIR Faculty of Medicine (FK).
His research presentation mentioned that current regenerative medicine is developing rapidly. This science aims to regenerate damaged tissues or organs. One part of regenerative medicine, said Prof. Ferdiansyah, is tissue engineering.
“Tissue engineering is a therapeutic method that uses a combination of living cells and proteins,” said the alumnus of the UNAIR Postgraduate School doctoral program.
Treatment through tissue engineering depends on the damaged organ and the severity of the damage. The biomaterials and proteins used will also be different. Prof. Ferdiansyah’s research shows that tissue engineering has the potential to be used in orthopedics.
“Orthopedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the promotion, prevention, and treatment of disease and trauma to the musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones),” he said. Tissue engineering, continued Prof. Ferdiansyah, is a new hope for regenerative medicine.
“(Tissue engineering, ed) has become a new hope in dealing with damage caused by diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This composite will repair the damage that occurs through the regeneration process and avoid scarring so that it is expected to restore damaged tissue function, “explained the 2018 AOS Award winner.
Advanced research
Prof. Ferdiansyah’s research does not stop there. As an implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, he continues to research and collaborate, including with the Tissue and Cell Bank Installation at Dr Soetomo Hospital , Surabaya.
“The Tissue and Cell Bank Installation of Dr Soetomo Hospital has served and distributed various tissues from donors on a limited basis throughout Indonesia,” explained the head of the Orthopedics and Traumatology study program Faculty of Medicine UNAIR.
According to him, the collaboration between UNAIR and Dr Soetomo Hospital needs to be continuously improved to produce the work of Indonesian researchers to meet the needs of patients in Indonesia.
“Tissue engineering is a new method that will be the hope of patients in the treatment of orthopedic disorders, including damage to tissues and even organs that the available methods cannot cure,” he said. (*)
