UNAIR NEWSUniversitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held the 232nd graduation ceremonies on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Airlangga Convention Center (ACC), Campus MERR-C. UNAIR Rector Prof Dr. Mohammad Nasih SE MT Ak inaugurated 998 graduates, comprising 19 diploma program graduates, 736 bachelor’s program graduates, 203 master’s graduates, and 40 doctoral program graduates.

In his welcoming speech, Prof Nasih congratulated all the graduates and their families. The achievement they obtained is not an overnight success. Those are the result of a long and exhausting process that they have fought for.

Being responsive

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) professor believed that responsiveness can be a determining factor in someone’s success. Therefore, every graduate should possess and equip themselves with good responsiveness skills. This skill will help graduates to adapt themselves to the needs and demands of the future.

“Only those who are capable of responding to environmental demands will succeed. Only giraffes, with their long necks, are able to survive. Don’t be like a frog when it is burned or boiled in a coconut shell. The temperature slowly rises, but the frog does not realize something happens,” Prof Nasih said.

“Once the water has boiled, there’s no more time to quickly responds or save yourself. Our tardiness in responding to the environment’s challenges causes us to be eroded by time and eventually fade away in the annals of history,” he added.

High risks for high-quality results

Furthermore, the rector also reminded graduates to possess humility and avoid self-righteousness. Therefore, graduates should continue to learn and explore more knowledge and they will never stop to be lifelong learners.

Besides, the graduates must be willing to take risks. As a Surabaya-based university, UNAIR graduates have been nurtured to have the courage and resilience akin to the spirit of the Surabaya community. Prof Nasih believed that there is no gain without risk. The higher the risk one expects, the higher the risk they have to face.

“Today, victory, excellence, and success are not achieved solely by great individuals, rich people, or those with sufficient resources. Instead, they are attained by those who dare to respond to challenges and seize opportunities. Don’t wait for perfection; the minute the opportunity arises, we must respond promptly,” he stated.

The 232nd graduation ceremony is a moment of celebration for UNAIR’s achievement in obtaining the second rank nationally and 100-200th globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023. Prof Nasih hoped that the achievement can boost the graduates’ confidence to compete with others at the national and international scales.
