UNAIR NEWS – A recent case of a 19-month-old baby diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Malaysia has captured widespread public attention. Dr. Pungky Mulawardhana, SpOG, Subsp. Onk, a specialist in Obstetrics and Oncology, explained that ovarian cancer typically affects adult women, often in later years. However, rare non-epithelial cases can also occur in infants and young children. Causing factor The specific causes of ovarian cancer in infants remain largely unknown. “Our bodies are protected by anti-oncogenes, yet when this defense is overpowered by oncogenes, cancer can emerge. Genetic factors may also play a role; for instance, BRCA gene mutations can increase cancer risk,”- dr. Pungky. Several factors are believed to contribute to its development such as smoking, poor nutrition, and radiation exposure. Preventive measures Genetic screening, avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke and processed foods, and managing stress, are essential steps to lower risk.
