LIHTR was established at the end of 2020 as a follow-up to Universitas Airlangga’s policy of becoming a SMART University, which stands for:

To become an institution that actively operates and grows in research and bioproducts, training and outreach, based on life sciences, engineering, and technology, as a leading entity at the national and international levels, grounded in religious morals.
Enhance the competence of Indonesian human resources to excel in the fields of life sciences, engineering, and technology, with global competitiveness.
Conduct innovative research in life sciences, engineering, and technology to address issues related to health, food security, and the environment.
Develop innovative products based on advanced biomaterials to support sustainable industrial development.
Improve the quality and quantity of publications, patents, and licenses.
