UNAIR NEWS – The International Workshop and Forensic Anthropology Symposium (IWFAS) 2024 was officially commenced on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. This prestigious event has been planned since last year by the Forensic Anthropology lecturers of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

The symposium is organized in partnership with the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). According to Rizky Sugianto Putri Sant, M.Si, Vice Chair of IWFAS 2024, the event aims to elevate the profile of Indonesian Forensic Anthropology in the global arena.

IWFAS 2024 is scheduled from September 4 to 7, 2024, at ASEEC Tower, featuring several experts and scholars specializing in Forensic Anthropology. It also provides a platform for participants to discuss their research in the field, which they have published in academic journals.

This year’s symposium’s theme, “How to Identify Human Skeletal Remains from a Forensic Anthropological Perspective,” has attracted considerable interest from forensic science scholars. “The theme was selected to align with the workshops that will be held over the three days,” explained Kiki, the symposium’s vice chair.

The event also features distinguished speakers, including Dr. Zuzana Obertová, who will share her extensive knowledge in Forensic Anthropology. “In addition to Dr. Obertová, other speakers will offer insights that will enrich the understanding of the attending scholars,” added the UNAIR FISIP Anthropology lecturer.

The symposium invites Forensic Anthropology researchers to contribute their ideas through dynamic panel discussions. “We have prepared four panel discussions featuring researchers presenting their compelling topics. These discussions will involve 27 researchers, each presenting a different topic within the field of Forensic Anthropology,” Kiki elaborated.

IWFAS 2024 not only serves as a prestigious event for FISIP UNAIR but also promotes the study of Forensic Anthropology in Indonesia. “Through this event, we hope that academics become more aware that FISIP UNAIR houses a cutting-edge forensic anthropology study center under the umbrella of the Ethnographic Studies Center,” she stated.

The organizers hope IWFAS will become an annual event, fostering growth and development in Forensic Anthropology studies. “We hope that this event will provide valuable knowledge sharing and insights into the advancement of Forensic Anthropology. Moreover, we aim for this symposium to continue every year,” she concluded.
