UNAIR NEWS – Dr. (HCUA) Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Chairperson of the Universitas Airlangga Alumni Association (IKA UNAIR), has been re-elected as the Governor of East Java. A distinguished graduate of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), she previously served as governor from 2019 to 2024.
Following her re-election, President Prabowo Subianto congratulated Dr. (HCUA) Khofifah during the 102nd Anniversary Celebration of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. She secured the highest number of votes in the simultaneous regional elections held on November 27, 2024.
Accomplished alumna
Dr. (HCUA) Khofifah is among UNAIR’s most distinguished alumni, having made a lasting impact in politics. The former Minister of Social Affairs earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from UNAIR between 1984 and 1991. Her political journey began in 1992, leading to several key positions. She served as a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR-RI) in 1995, was appointed Deputy Speaker of the DPR-RI in 1999, and later assumed the role of Chairperson of Commission VII of the DPR-RI in 2004.
Her influence extends beyond the legislative branch. From 1999 to 2001, she served as the State Minister for Women’s Empowerment. Under President Joko Widodo’s administration, she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs from 2014 to 2018.
In 2023, UNAIR honored Dr. (HCUA) Khofifah with an honorary doctorate in recognition of her exceptional contributions. She delivered an academic oration titled Reforming the Social Protection System for Accelerating Poverty Alleviation during UNAIR’s 234th graduation ceremony, where Rector Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE, MT, Ak, officially conferred the title.
This honor was awarded in recognition of her outstanding achievements and innovative policies, particularly in social protection reform. Her initiatives, such as the Family Hope Program (PKH), have significantly contributed to poverty reduction by ensuring more equitable social assistance for communities.
