UNAIR NEWS – For humans, taking medicine the right way is the key to the effectiveness of therapy. It works the same for animals. It inspired Prof. Dr. Mochammad Lazuardi drh MSi, a professor of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), to make an innovation.
Problems
Large animal groups are divided into two: wild animals and farm animals. These animals have limitations in consuming medicine. Meanwhile, the medicine consists of various preparations such as syrup, suspension, and other forms. “The suspension form requires liquid to dissolve the medicine,” he said.
Medicine that enters the animal’s body must be ensured that they enter the stomach. If it does not reach the stomach, it will affect the efficacy of the medicine. “Medicine administered through the mouth must reach the stomach. But each drug has different characteristics. If the drug does not enter the stomach, the efficacy of the drug will decrease,” said Prof. Lazuardi.
“Administering medicine to animals is not easy. Even though there are animals that are easy to control, the animal can play with its tongue so that the drug can enter the lungs, not the stomach,” he added. This problem inspired Prof. Lazuardi to create a drug measuring drench for large animals named Lazuardi Drench.
Benefits
The innovation created by Prof. Lazuardi aims to facilitate oral medicine administration. “My goal in making this innovation is to make it easier for animal owners or keepers to give medicine to animals and get the medicine to the stomach,” he explained.
Uniquely, this innovation not only helps users to administer medicine but also to mix drugs, such as suspension preparations with liquid, so that they are mixed properly.
“Success is related to the dosage form. If it is a suspension, it must be shaken so that the liquid is mixed well,” he explained.

This innovation, which has obtained Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), uses the concept of centripetal and centrifugal forces to help dissolve the drug. The tool he created has a capacity of 750cc, which aims to make it easier for users.
This innovation is not only beneficial for animals or their owners, but humans also get the impact. “Drugs that enter the animal’s body impact humans who consume them. With this tool, there is a guarantee that the drugs taken by animals go straight to the stomach so that humans who consume meat, milk, and eggs are well-protected from residues,” he explained.
First in the world
Lazuardi Drench is the first innovation in the world and is being prepared and marketed for domestic and global markets. “This innovation will later be circulated in Indonesia or Southeast Asia. So the veterinary medicine circulating in this area will be accompanied by drench,” he explained.
Prof. Lazuardi will continue to develop his innovation. Later on, the drench will be complemented with a special cover. “If you administer medicine in an open area or in high pollution conditions, such as a big city, there is a risk for the medicine to absorb dirty air. The cover will be impermeable, which will later be useful for cleaning germs,” he concluded. (*)
