UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) celebrates another proud moment as its student organization, Masyarakat Yuris Muda Airlangga (MYMA), from the Faculty of Law (FH), clinches first place at the 2025 Dr. Mochtar Riady Legal Week (DMRLW). The team earns top honors in the national scientific writing competition (LKTI), hosted by UPH Tangerang on Friday, June 13, 2025.
According to Yonathan, who leads the delegation, the team—named Arjuna—was initially formed simply out of curiosity and a desire to gain experience. The students joined without any expectations of winning.
“At first, we honestly didn’t set out to win. None of us had ever competed in an LKTI before,” he said. “But over time, the encouragement from our MYMA mentors really inspired us to put in our best effort and eventually guided us toward victory.”
Innovating with AI
The team’s success is credited in part to their forward-thinking concept. Yonathan explains that their paper explores the potential of artificial intelligence in managing and organizing legal regulations in Indonesia. He believes the topic is especially timely given the nation’s current legislative challenges.
“As we all know, Indonesia’s regulatory framework is messy and problematic,” he said. “This disorganization causes ripple effects in how our government operates. That’s why we propose using AI—to streamline the legal system and make it more efficient and effective.”
Despite having a compelling concept, Yonathan acknowledges that conducting the research and building strong arguments was no easy task. He notes that LKTI writing requires a very specific approach. “It’s a skill you really have to develop. Writing arguments that are concise, logical, and easy for readers to follow takes practice,” he added.
Call for reform
Through their work, Yonathan and his team hope to prompt policymakers to take meaningful steps toward improving Indonesia’s national legal system. They see this as vital to realizing the country’s ambitious 2045 Golden Indonesia vision. “Our greatest hope is that decision-makers will act quickly to resolve the systemic issues plaguing our legal institutions,” he said.
In closing, Yonathan encourages fellow students to embrace opportunities to compete and grow. “Competitions help sharpen skills that are incredibly valuable in the workplace,” he said. “So don’t hesitate to join. You never know when success might find you.”
