UNAIR NEWS – A few days ago, social media influencer @catwomanizer created a buzz on Twitter by sharing safe period sex tips using contraception methods. The statements quickly provoke pros and cons. Here’s what the UNAIR expert says on the matter.

Taboo

Prof. Dr. Budi Santoso, dr. SpOG, Subsp. FER, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, and an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist responded to the case. He deemed the idea “unfamiliar” and even “taboo” for the local community.

“Due to the difficulty in placing the contraceptive device in the appropriate position on the cervix. It is highly unlikely for the device to remain in a fixed position during sexual intercourse, which can cause it to shift and potentially lead to infections,” he said.

Sex education has spread in some developed countries. However, the idea also poses risks for both women and men.

The risks

Improper placement of the contraceptive device can lead to infections in the cervix. Therefore, it is crucial to approach such matters with caution. Adequate knowledge and education are essential to prevent any harm to the vagina.

“Improper placement is susceptible to menstrual blood leakage, which can lead to the potential transmission of diseases. Menstrual blood is dirty and contains bacteria. Therefore, engaging in sexual intercourse during the period is strongly discouraged, not only because it goes against social norms, but it’s also highly risky,” Prof. Budi said.

The risk of ascending infection is inevitable. The scattered blood causes bacteria to get into the urinary tract, which can potentially impact both the woman and man and lead to fertility issues for both.

Safe sex tips

To prevent such risks, the Dean advises maintaining personal hygiene and cleanliness, including avoiding period sex. The practice can transmit diseases in just a matter of time.

“Thus, it is important for the public to discern the information on social media and learn the risks associated with the educational or informational content presented on these platforms,” he said.
