UNAIR NEWS – Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve, causing vision loss. One of the factors for glaucoma is increased pressure in the eye.
To commemorate World Glaucoma Week 2024, Ophthalmologist dr. Yulia Primitasari Sp M(K) from the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga shared the details on the Dokter Unair TV, on Tuesday, March 13, 2024.
Glaucoma is considered one of the silent killer diseases as the person will not feel the symptoms immediately. The symptoms develop gradually, eventually leading to blindness.
“The peripheral vision gradually diminishes from eyesight. This is sometimes overlooked in eye examinations. Glaucoma may not occur suddenly; it could already be present but unnoticed until it damages the nerve,” she said.
Regular eye exams
Regular eye exams are crucial for preventing glaucoma, especially for individuals aged 50 and above. Early detection through eye exams can help mitigate the risk and severity of the condition.
A person with a familial medical background should also undergo screening, as it can increase their risk factors compared to individuals without such inherited conditions.
“Regular exams are crucial in preventing glaucoma. Without early examination, it may lead to severe eye damage that could result in permanent blindness,” dr. Yulia added.
Treatment
Although the disease cannot be fully cured, treatment can be administered to prevent severity. One of them is the administration of eye pressure medication to lower the pressure.
“If medication is not effective, we usually proceed with advanced treatment such as laser therapy or surgery. However, we must consider the patient’s risk factors and complications,” she explained.
Patients with glaucoma must take the prescribed medication regularly. It is a matter of great concern if surgery needs to be performed due to irregular medication intake.
“Undergo regular exams if you experience any discomfort in the eyes. Do not underestimate minor symptoms. Regular exams will reduce the risk factors for severe glaucoma. Let’s contribute to Glaucoma-Free Indonesia,” she said.
