UNAIR NEWS – Prof Dr. Anang Endaryanto dr SpA (K), was officially inaugurated as the professor of Universitas Airlangga on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. He officially assumes the responsibility of Professor of Pediatrics at Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Medicine.
Prof Anang was listed as 123rd professor of UNAIR Faculty of Medicine, 561st professor since the institution’s establishment, and 269th since UNAIR was appointed as a Legal Entity State University (PTN-BH). At the ceremony, Prof Anang delivered a scientific oration on ‘The Role of Immunotherapy in Mitigation of World Climate Change’.
He stated that people commonly complain about health problems and diseases, such as allergies, autoimmune, diabetes, cardiovascular, cancer, and neurodegenerative which highly impact socio-economic productivity.
“Unfortunately, most of us only analyze the disease from our side. We never analyze deeper to the root cause of getting diseases in the elder ages. Because, in fact, the health problems are caused by the critical windows phase, which is highly impacted by the environmental conditions,” he said.
Critical windows quality
There are four types of intelligence: skills, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual. The quality of immune and brain interactions is affected by the quality of the environment, which is relevant to the anticipated climate change.
“Bad environment may result in low-quality human resources for a lifetime. Therefore, climate change is our biggest challenge,” he said.
Effects of climate change on human health
Prof Anang believed that many people still view climate change as a mere rising temperature. They did not notice the various impacts climate change caused. One of them is human health’s vulnerability, including respiratory diseases.
“When the body cells are invaded, it weakens our immune system causing respiratory diseases with chronic inflammation symptoms, non-infectious diseases, and mental illness,” said the professor.
In the ceremony, Prof Anang expressed his gratitude to everyone who has supported him throughout his journey achieving professorship, especially to his family.
“Though professorship is the highest academic position, it is not the end of our career journey. In the future, we are going to contribute more to fulfill the professorship responsibility,” he said.
