UNAIR NEWS – Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, M.Si, M.Fin has been elected as the new Rector of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) for the 2025–2030 term. His selection followed a structured process that included candidate screening, a public forum for the university community, and a final decision during a plenary session held by the UNAIR Board of Trustees (MWA) on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Chairman of the UNAIR Board of Trustees, Prof. (HCUA) Dr. H. Sunarto, SH, MH, stated that the final voting was based on three candidates who had previously passed the selection process conducted by the Academic Senate. Out of 30 board members, 27 cast their votes, while 3 were absent.
“The voting results showed Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan receiving the highest number of votes with 13, followed by Prof. Dr. Koko Srimulyo, Drs., M.Si, who received 9 votes, and Prof. Dr. Dwi Setyawan, S.Si, M.Si, Apt, with 4 votes. One vote was recorded as an abstention,” he explained.

As a result, Prof. Madyan will be officially inaugurated on June 17, 2025, succeeding Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, MT, Ak, CA, who has served as rector for two consecutive terms.
Prof. Sunarto emphasized that UNAIR is now setting its sights on a new institutional benchmark—earning a spot among the top 200 universities in the QS World University Rankings. “With collaborative effort, I believe this target is well within our reach. We ask for the support of all parties in achieving this vision,” he said.
Current Rector Prof. Nasih expressed his gratitude for the orderly and democratic election process. He highlighted the importance of maintaining continuity in leadership and praised the integrity and commitment of all three candidates, who had signed an agreement pledging to uphold ethical and legal standards and to work collaboratively.
“Rankings are merely indicators. What truly matters is the quality and impact of our research, teaching, and community services. If we focus on those areas, the rankings will naturally follow,” he remarked.
He added that Prof. Madyan is expected to carry the torch of leadership and further UNAIR’s global reputation, while continuing to strengthen the foundation built over the past decade.
