UNAIR NEWS – Conservation is an attempt to protect and preserve nature, especially to maintain the biodiversity and the population of wild animals in the conservation area. As prospective veterinarians, several things need to be highlighted before students go into action in the wildlife.

To prepare for the goal, WDAC HMKH of the School of Health Science and Natural Science (SIKIA) Universitas Airlangga held a conservation class to observe and analyze the wild animals on August 11-12, 2022 in the Baluran National Park, Situbondo, East Java.

To increase the participant’s knowledge of the wildlife, Chief Executive of the 2022 Conservation Class, Gusti Ayu Illiyin Putri Santosa said that the agenda was filled with scientific discussion and exploring the Baluran National Park.

“The conservation class includes workshop, seminar, Forum Group Discussion (FGD), and wildlife observation,” she said.

The conservation expert from UNAIR Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) and the forest rangers of Baluran National Park attended the scientific discussion and nature exploration event.

“The conservation class was attended by Dr Boedi Setiawan drh M P as the field supervisor and Mr. Hendri Reskiyono, the Forest Ranger Superintendent of Baluran National Park,” Illiyin said.

The photography contest was also held to commemorate World Nature Conservation Day and support the wildlife conservation digital campaign.

The second-year student of SIKIA veterinary medicine explained that the activity aims to increase the participant’s sensitivity to recognize job opportunities in conservation, wildlife, and improve the knowledge and self-awareness of wildlife conservation in the Baluran National Park, Situbondo.

“The participants will gain more knowledge on the conservation importance of wild animals which are classified as threatened animals, especially the endemic animals in Baluran,” she said.

Illiyin hoped that participants will understand veterinarians’ role in the conservation of wildlife in Indonesia due to the minimum exposure.

“Hopefully, all participants can understand the role of veterinarians in wildlife conservation in Indonesia, especially in the Baluran National Park, Situbondo.”
