UKM OF MARTIAL ARTS

Develop Your Talents and Interest!

Universitas Airlangga has more than 60 leadership development units and student organizations. These groups are spread across different levels of organization, from that of study programs, faculties, to university. Within these groups, there are Student Activity Units (UKM).
A UKM is a forum for developing student soft skills based on their interests and talents. There are five categories of UKM in Unair, namely: UKM of the Special Category consisting of six organizations, UKM of the Art category with eight organizations, UKM of the Sports category consisting of 13 organizations, UKM of the Martial Arts category with nine organizations, and UKM of Spirituality consisting of five organizations.

1. Setia Hati Terate

PSHT is a martial art college or institution that aims to form virtuous people, knowing the right and wrong to fear God Almighty and teach loyalty as well as prioritize brotherhood among members. PSHT stands for Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate and is a member of Indonesian Martial Arts Association (IPSI).

2. Ju-jitsu

Jujitsu is derived from various types of martial arts from Japan. This type of martial arts is believed to have both self-defense and health advantages.

3. Kempo

Kempo is Japanese martial arts whose training methods follow the philosophical views that “soul and body are an inseparable unity” known as (shinshin ichinyo) and “practicing body and soul” or known as (kenzen ichinyo). Kempo is then believed to have three advantages: “training and defense” or (goshin rentan), “mental training” or (seishin shuyo), and “health improvement” (kenko zoshin).

4. Karate-Do

Karate-Do is an institution covering student activities related to martial arts , and particularly Karate. This unit aimed at developing students’ moral and intellectual integrity, developing supportive cultures that are critical and creative manifested in social awareness and solidarity.

5. Tae Kwon-Do

Tae Kwon-Do Student Activity Unit is aimed at improving students ability in taekwondo martial arts, so that the values and skills can be implemented in the society.

6. Merpati Putih

Merpati Putih is one of Indonesian bare hands martial arts (PPS Betako) and one of Indonesian cultural assets. Merpati Putih is an acronyms of Javanese expression Mersudi Patitising Tindak Pusakane Titising Hening which means “To seek until achieving the right manner in silence” or “To seek and To Find That Which is Right,

7. Perisai Diri

Perisai Diri, a combination of various Indonesian martials arts developed in Indonesian archipelago, is a sport and martial arts containing aspects of Indonesian national cultures and characterized as “fast, precise, agile, organized, and virtuous” and follow the principles of “teaching, loving, and nurturing” or known as “asah, asih, dan asuh”.

8. Tapak Suci

Tapak suci is an Indonesian martial arts organization as an autonomous organization of Muhammadiyah. This student unit aims to develop students’ soft skills and to popularize UNAIR in regional and national events. Students are trained in martial arts as well trained for organizational skills and steps to gain achievements.

6. Pagar Nusa

Pagar Nusa is a martial arts organization that has a strong traditional and Islamic religious related activities, particularly the traditions and cultures of Aswaja followers.
