Tips to protect skin during exercise

Novita Damayanti Dr. SpDV FAADV explains how to protect skin during exercise

UNAIR NEWS – Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) on Dokter TV’s YouTube channel has discussed how to protect the skin during outdoor activities. The talk show on Friday, July 7, 2023, is part of a series of Medic Air Run events held by FK UNAIR next August.

Novita Damayanti Dr. SpDV FAADV, as Director and Dermatologist of Profira Clinic, said that sunlight has several rays that affect human skin, for example UVA, UVB, UVC, visible light, and infrared. These rays have effects such as redness, burning, dryness, etc.

“The effect of sunlight on the skin has several effects that we can feel. Like redness, tight skin, inflamed pimples and so on. So, we need to protect our skin from the sun, “explained Doctor Novita.

Use sunblock and sunscreen

Before doing outdoor activities, you need to pay attention to the UV index. The UV index is for knowing how much solar radiation hits the skin. The UV index will increase at certain hours, for example, from 09.00 am to noon. Thus, protection is needed to protect the skin from high UV exposure by using sunblock or sunscreen. Sunblock and sunscreen use also need to consider the skin type.

“Before using it, we need to know our skin type when using type A, B, or other types. It is important because sunblock serves to protect the skin. So we need a broad spectrum sunblock.”

Sunblock and sunscreen must be used 15 minutes before outdoor activities on areas clearly exposed to sunlight, such as the face, hands, neck, back of the neck, and feet. The amount of sunblock used is at least three fingers.

“According to research by the American Journal of Dermatology, the use of sunscreen is minimum three fingers.”

Pay attention to outfit

The outfit choice during exercise also affects the skin’s protection from sun radiation. Clothes that are too loose and light-colored still allow sunlight to enter.

“So, for protection against the sun, clothing must also be considered. Maybe you can choose darker clothes when you exercise.”

Use sunglasses and hat

Doctor Novi also recommends wearing a hat and glasses during exercise. “Some important items to use during sports are hats and glasses. They can also protect from sun exposure, so it’s not just fashion, right,” she explained.
